Rufus Holt, affectionately known as "Scooner," passed away on April 22, 2025, at his residence under the excellent care of Guiding Light Hospice, in Hampton, Georgia, Rufus dedicated much of his life to his career as a brick mason, spending an impressive forty years employed by Building Systems Masonry in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Rufus was born on October 20, 1939 to the late Ellie and Millie Holt and attended the Public Schools of Bulloch County, after his education at William James High School he migrated to Philadelphia, PA where he spent many years before returning to his roots in Georgia, finally settling in Hampton in 2022. His legacy as a skilled craftsman will be remembered by his colleagues and those who admired his workmanship.
A devoted lover of quartet gospel music, Rufus cherished his faith, his family, and a good Southern meal. He created a warm and loving home where laughter and music often filled the air. His commitment to family was evident in everything he did, and he took immense pride in being a supportive father, grandfather, and friend.
Rufus is survived by his wife, Doretha Holt; his sister, Addie Spearman; brothers-in-law, Herman (Mattie) Lanier and Theo Lanier, Sr.; four children, Alvin (Debra) Adams, Latesha Holt, Benita Holt, and Vanessa Coates; three adopted daughters, Tina Chaitan, Lisa Harvey, and Marva Graham; fifteen grandchildren, Nicole Morris, Harold Williams, Leslie Holland, Shaquana Tolliver, Tyrone (Joshua) McCoy, Kiara Joyner, Quianna Joyner, Arianna Joyner, Atia Adams, Nakesha Fisher, Felisha Fisher, Joseph Chaitan, Kamill Chaitan, Charlei George, and Chaz George; thirty great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellie and Millie Holt; siblings, Lena Holt, Beulah Sneed, Carol Sneed, Lee Littles, Millie Lanier, and Colbert Lee Holt; as well as his grandson, Antsenio Barber, and granddaughter, Hasannah Terry.
A Celebration of Life for Mr. Holt will be held on April 26, 2025, from 12:00 at Agape Worship Center, located at 810 West Grady Street, Statesboro, GA 30458.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral hour at the church. There will be no viewing after the eulogy.
Rufus will be remembered for his loving spirit, dedication to family, and impact on those around him. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
